Questions and Answers

  • Is lodging included?

Yes. Dark Horse Recording has a separate mansion called "The Manor" with several rooms. The workshop total price is $2695 plus the room fee. To see the rooms and fees, click here.

  • How and when do I pay?

After you've applied and been accepted to the workshop, payment can be made by Visa card or Venmo. Don't pay until your application status and room selection has been confirmed.

  • What's the meal plan?

We'll have dinners together in The Manor House. The first night's dinner is included in the workshop fee. Food will be brought in from a nearby restaurant. If you have any food intolerance issues, be sure to let us know in advance, and we'll do our best to accommodate. For all other meals, we can all pitch in to have food delivered from a restaurant, based on various people's preferences. There is also a nice kitchen and fridge you may use if you would like to bring your own food or snacks.

  • What if I don't play an instrument?

Songwriting teams usually consist of individuals with strength in one of three areas: lyric writing, singing and melody, and instrument playing. You'll be teamed with people whose strengths complement yours. When we select workshop participants, we'll create a balance between producers/players, singers/artists, and lyricists.

  • Who will sing on the recordings?

During Wednesday’s live-band recording, each co-write group will pick one of the song's co-writers to be “the singer” of your new co-written song. That person will sing in an isolation booth while the band lays down the song in a few takes. If the other co-writers would like to have a version with them singing, we can record that on Thursday morning. It’s really fun. We record three takes, and later "comp" a final version from those three takes. A few weeks after the workshop, we'll make a backing track and multitrack files of the songs you've co-written available for download. The goal is that everyone who wants to sing will have a recording of themselves on their songs.

  • Who owns the songs?

When you co-write, you share ownership of the song equally with the song's other co-writers. Promoting and publishing the song is up to the owners of the song. Each co-owner agrees to not hinder the other co-owner's efforts to release or monetize the song, whether through sync licensing, streaming or publishing deals. The studio musicians are considered “work for hire” which means they get paid for playing on the day of the session in liu of song ownership.

  • Flights? Airports?

Nashville Airport (BNA) is the nearest big airport. Plan on arriving at BNA by midday on Monday the 4th, so that you'll have time to get a car and find your way to Dark Horse by 4pm. On Thursday the 7th, our checkout is at 8am, but we have use of the recording studio all morning for vocal and instrumental overdubs. If you're flying out Thursday, figure on a PM return flight so you have time to get to BNA and make your flight in a relaxed fashion.

  • Staying organized in a co-write:

We highly encourage the use of the website www.SessionStudio.com for keeping track of song ownership and versions of lyrics and production. Here is a quick YouTube overview of what Session Studio is: CLICK HERE. And here is a link to SessionStudio.com itself. Please have your account set up before you come to the workshop, if you don’t already have it. SessionStudio.com makes song ownership easy to keep track of.

  • Driving directions?

For iPhone mapping, use this address:

    2465 Old Charlotte Pike
    Franklin, TN 37064

  • What music styles are welcome?

From singer/songwriter to southern rock, contemporary Christian to praise music, rock to pop... All are encouraged. We hope the songs that come out of this workshop will inspire and entertain. Whatever is "true"... whatever points to "good" or "beautiful" in life — those are great attributes to weave into a song. And a relatable storyline never hurts.

  • May I record one of my own songs, in addition to the co-written songs?

Absolutely yes. Session musicians will record your song with Kevin producing your vocals separately, plus mixing and final mastering. Cost is $650 per song, with a two-song minimum (can be your song plus someone else's). Limit four songs for the session. You and Kevin would work together prior to the workshop to create a Nashville Numbers chart. And, suppose you have a strong song but it's not quite finished, we can help you complete it lyrically or structurally so it's ready to go when you get to the recording session.
